What is Italo Disco?

Italo Disco came out of Italy at the start of the 1980s, when producers swapped the live disco orchestra for synthesizers, drum machines and the vocoder. The result was cheaper to make and impossible to mistake: bright synth melodies, a steady four-on-the-floor beat, robotic vocals and lyrics in accented English about love, the night and outer space.

Labels such as Discomagic, Il Discotto and Memory Records pressed hundreds of singles between roughly 1982 and 1988. Many sold modestly at the time and turned into collector's items years later. That is why a good Italo station lives on its rarities as much as its hits, and it is the part we care about most.

The sound did not stay in one place. Euro Disco pushed it toward the pop charts, Hi-NRG sped it up for the dancefloor, and Spacesynth took the melodies into instrumental, science-fiction territory. We play across all of it.
